You Can’t Hear Your Calling Over the Noise
The world is noisy. Everywhere we turn, someone has advice, opinions, or a “proven” formula for success. But when we’re constantly searching out there—listening to everyone else—we risk missing the quiet voice that’s trying to guide us from within.
Recently, I was struck by a quote from Maya Watson, a guest on Kudzi Chikumbu’s Not Just One Thing - The Portfolio Career Podcast. She said:
“It’s very difficult to become who you're designed to be in the crowd.”
She was talking about the process of discovering who you’re truly called to be—and how sometimes, that means stepping offline and away from the noise.
Author Matthew Kelly echoes this in his book The Three Ordinary Voices of God. He writes about being “petrified of mis-living” his life—a fear I deeply relate to. Kelly warns that we can easily mis-live our lives when we fail to pause and listen for God’s voice, the one steering us toward the life He envisioned for us.
He says:
“The mistake we make is listening to all the other voices that shout, whisper, or scream into our lives.”
Every day, we’re bombarded with messages from “experts” and “influencers” who all have competing opinions, ideas, and agendas. Kelly reminds us that the way to stop listening to the wrong voices is to be still—to give God the opportunity to guide you.
And when we do, as he puts it:
“You give God the opportunity to radically alter the direction of your life.”
My Own Pause for Clarity
Last week, I took three days to do just that—to quiet the noise, listen to God, and trust my gut. My husband and I escaped to a small lake in the Adirondacks for two nights. No cell service. No TV. Just nature, stillness, and a time for thinking, talking, and planning.
It was divine.
Tom and I spent an entire evening talking through our CliftonStrengths® reports—reflecting on how we are (or aren’t) using our natural, God-given talents. We took long walks in the woods.. I spent time reading Matthew Kelly’s book, reviewing my Discovering Your Calling framework, and creating my business plan for the rest of the year.
It was exactly what my heart and spirit needed. And I left more convinced than ever of the importance of this work.
Living Without Regret
Like Maya and Matthew, I’ve often said my #1 goal in life is to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant,” when I reach the pearly gates. I don’t want to miss a single thing God has planned for me—and I certainly don’t want to leave my gifts and talents unused.
I, too, fear “mis-living” my life.
If you can relate, maybe it’s time to step into your calling.
If you feel pulled in a dozen directions—trying to please everyone or follow what others say you should do—it might be time to turn down the volume of the world and tune into your own God-given voice.
Look at your natural talents. Your vision. Your dreams, skills, and values. That’s where your true mission is revealed.
That’s exactly what we explore inside the Discovering Your Calling Academy framework. It’s not about me telling you how to do it—it’s about me guiding you to create space, ask the right questions, and learn to trust your heart and your gut.
When you do, the outside noise fades—and your true calling becomes clear. I have a few 1:1 coaching spots available between now and the end of 2025.
