When Comparison Steals Your Clarity (And How to Get It Back)

Have you ever spent time planning, thinking, and praying about your work?

You have a really powerful clarity/strategy session. Whether it was by yourself, a mentor, or a coach. You walk away with a strategy. You know exactly what you need to do and how to move forward in building a successful business.

Then you hop on LinkedIn.

Suddenly, everything you just planned starts to feel uncertain.

You see Julie wrote a book, and you wonder if you should finally write a book too.

Or Lynn just redesigned her podcast cover art, and now you're wondering if it’s time to redo your podcast cover… and all the assets that go with it. (Or maybe you don’t even have a podcast and now you're wondering if this is the year you should start one.)

Then you notice Amy speaking at another event. Annette just attended a retreat. Jim is hosting a workshop.

And suddenly you’re wondering if that’s the direction you should be headed.

Five minutes ago, you had clarity and a strategy.

Now it feels like it’s completely out the window.

Comparison, imposter syndrome, and decision fatigue take over, and all you want to do is retreat back to the couch with your favorite book or Netflix show.

It’s no wonder so many of us live our lives exhausted while searching for our next best step.

With so many options available today, it’s easy to become confused about which ones are actually right for us.

And that confusion is exhausting.

But here’s the thing.

I know you want to live in your calling and excel at it. I know you desire more from your work and life than what you currently have. And deep inside, you know you have what it takes to create the work and life you desire.

But in order to do that, you can’t just get clear on a strategy.

You must get crystal clear on yourstrategy.

Because when we start comparing our plans to someone else’s path, we aren’t being fair to ourselves — or to them.

There are four important things to consider when you feel tempted to follow someone else’s plan.

1. Your Life Situation

What are your current life obligations? They may look completely different from the person you’re tempted to emulate.

Do you still have small children at home while they’re empty nesters?

Do you have elderly parents who rely on you for weekly support, while they are single with few outside obligations except their dog and cat?

Do they have a spouse who supports them financially while you are the primary breadwinner?

All of these factors shape how someone builds a business or career.

2. Your Natural Talents and Strengths

What are your natural talents compared to theirs?

For example, if someone has high Woo® and thrives in constant networking, but you lead with Relator®, trying to model their strategy will likely leave you feeling exhausted and discouraged.

Or maybe you have strong Influencing talents that would make you a dynamic speaker — but you’re trying to force yourself into a business model that requires endless systems, procedures, and behind-the-scenes work.

Eventually, that kind of misalignment catches up with you.

3. Your Goals for Work and Life

Another critical factor is goals.

Someone else may be aiming to build a seven-figure business.

Meanwhile, you may be in a season where working fewer hours and earning $50,000 while enjoying your life feels like success.

Neither is wrong.

But if you try to follow their blueprint instead of honoring your own priorities, you’ll eventually feel exhausted and out of alignment.

Or maybe you’re ready to franchise your business — but suddenly you’re tempted to write a book because someone else just did.

The truth is, you can’t do everything at once.

4. Your Level of Support

This is the one that drives me a little crazy.

Many business experts teach their “simple” strategy for running a business in ten hours a week.

What they don’t always mention is the large support team working behind the scenes — assistants, editors, marketing teams, and operations support.

They simply show up for the sweetest parts of the business.

They aren’t doing every step they’re teaching you to do.  Maybe they once did all those tasks when they were a solo entrepreneur, but they were likely working far more than ten hours a week.

Staying in Your Lane

I’m not sharing any of this to criticize anyone.

There’s nothing wrong with building a large business or working fewer hours. There’s nothing wrong with retreats, podcasts, books, or speaking stages.

What matters is alignment.

We need to build our careers and businesses in a way that honors:

• our current life situation
• our natural talents and strengths
• our goals for work and life
• and the support we realistically have

When we ignore those things and start chasing someone else’s strategy, we often end up overwhelmed, exhausted, and wondering why success feels so heavy.

But when we stay in our lane — and build in alignment with who we are and the season we’re in — something powerful happens.

Clarity returns.

Momentum follows.

And the work starts to feel energizing again.

Here’s a simple filter you can use anytime comparison tries to steal your clarity.

The next time you’re tempted to follow someone else’s strategy for success, pause and ask yourself four questions:

  1. Does this align with my current life situation and capacity?

  2. Will my natural talents and strengths thrive in this direction?

  3. Will this move me closer to the goals I actually want?

  4. Do I realistically have the support to execute this well right now?

If the answer is yes, move forward with confidence.

If the answer is no, give yourself permission to stay focused on the path that fits you.

Because success doesn’t come from copying someone else’s strategy.

It comes from building a path that honors your strengths, your season of life, and your vision for the future.

And that’s how we build businesses with excellence — not exhaustion.

If you're ready to build YOUR strategy—one that honors your strengths, your season, and your vision—that's exactly what I help leaders and entrepreneurs do.

I offer Clarity & Strategy Intensives where we spend focused time mapping your unique path forward, free from comparison and aligned with what actually energizes you.

Because you don't need someone else's blueprint. You need clarity on your own.
