Find Your True Calling: Break Free from Modern-Day Career Myths

Break free from modern day career myths and find your true calling

Are you feeling unfulfilled in your current career? It's time to take a hard look at whether you're wasting your God-given potential. Let's dive into the myths and realities of modern career choices to help you align your career with purpose.

I've always aimed to live my life to the fullest, utilizing all the talents and gifts that God has put inside me. And I'm sure you share a similar vision for your life. But often, the modern world steers us towards career choices that may not align with our true potential. Today, I want to break down the three biggest modern-day myths on how to search for a career and why they don't work. I'll share tips on what to do instead so you can create a career life that leaves you feeling excited and successful AND  uses all of your God-given potential.

Myth number one: looking for safe and steady careers.

The concept of seeking a secure job with benefits is deeply ingrained in our society, but is it really the path to fulfillment? Too many times, this mentality will lead you to a job with benefits, but you quickly find yourself bored and burned out!

What if, instead, you looked for a career that stretches you, excites you, and encourages continuous growth rather than settling for a job that merely provides security?  A job that you wouldn’t want to leave in two years!

Myth number two: choosing jobs based solely on salary

While financial stability is important, it should not be the sole factor in your career decisions. The world tells us that earning a significant paycheck is the key to happiness, and we should be willing to compromise our true desires to achieve financial success.

Instead, imagine selecting a career that ignites your passion and gives you a sense of purpose!  Then, figure out how to earn a good income while pursuing that path. In a recent Discovery Your Calling podcast, I guide you through an exercise to help you uncover your true purpose and passion and how to align it with a career that ignites your spirit.

Myth number three: basing career choices on skill sets.

The problem is that you may have skills you didn’t like from past jobs!  You’ve probably worked at a job where you were smart enough to figure out HOW to do the job and perhaps were even good at it, but you never liked it, and at the end of the day, you were exhausted!  We don’t want to step into a new career that calls for us to use these same skills.

Instead, look for or create a career based on using your God-given talents and strengths. What gifts do you have inside of you that if you learned how to unleash those gifts, you’d not only find more success but feel energized? Your natural talents and strengths should be the foundation of your career decisions!

In the comments, let me know which of these myths have kept you trapped in a career that doesn't feel aligned. Or is there another myth that has kept you stuck?
